PGY 4 EXPERIENCE
Kyle Schultz DO, MBA, MS
Class of 2021
Personally, fourth year of residency met all expectations. Coming off the awesome New Orleans rotation to end third year, I was able to continue right into fourth year with increased responsibility. Experiencing the challenge of overseeing junior residents not only helps solidify the topics in your mind, but also makes you re-evaluate how to effectively communicate with others. It’s a year for not only growth of your surgical skills, but also learning how to effectively help others manage patients away the bedside.
The fellowship match process was long and difficult at times. My co-residents and I all applied to Sports Medicine fellowships, with all three of us frequently traveling to the same interview. This made the process more enjoyable, but only because of the willingness for the rest of the residents and the program to cover our workloads while away. Consistently, year after year, the program rallies around fourth year residents to make sure they are able to explore every opportunity in the fellowship match process.
