PGY 3
Your third year allows continued growth during five months running a service while rotating with faculty and one month of ortho night float. This year is capped by a 4-month rotation at Children's Hospital in New Orleans, LA and a 2-month rotation at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, MI.
CHILDREN'S HOSPITALÂ NEW ORLEANS
During your third year you will participate in a 4-month rotation in pediatric orthopedics at CHNOLA in New Orleans, Louisiana. Residents experience a diverse range of pediatric pathology including trauma, congenital deformity, developmental dysplasia of the hip, clubfoot, overuse sporting injuries, pediatric musculoskeletal oncology, and many others. You will be exposed to an exceptional complex spinal deformity and scoliosis corrective surgery experience as well.
This hands-on rotation is directed by faculty from Louisiana State University and Tulane University that value resident education. Call responsibilities are approximately q4 with rotating weekends, working alongside other residents from LSU, Tulane, and Garden City, MI programs. Housing and meals at the hospital are provided. You will have the opportunity to present a lecture at Grand Rounds to CHNOLA faculty, visiting professors, fellows, residents, and staff. Residents participate in outreach clinics across Louisiana designed to address the needs of underserved rural populations. You will also experience the unique multidisciplinary clinics for cerebral palsy and spinal bifida patients and become part of the interprofessional team sharing in decision making with these complex patients and their parents.
While in New Orleans you will have time to explore the city and surrounding areas and attractions. Residents in the past have enjoyed their time in NOLA by indulging in the exceptional food, exploring historical landmarks, attending professional sporting events, experiencing SEC football, and the occasional trip down to Bourbon street. There are multiple locations to explore and previous residents pass on a guide to the incoming visiting resident to advise them on how to excel in the rotation (and the best way to enjoy the city!).
This rotation is consistently reviewed as one of the best experiences of the entire residency program.
Trauma: Hurley Medical Center
Hurley Medical Center Faculty
Further as a third year resident, you will spend 2 months at Hurley Medical Center, a level 1 trauma center in Flint, Michigan. At Hurley, you will gain exposure in complex orthopedic trauma cases, such as complex pelvis cases, gunshot wounds, polytrauma, and much more.
During this rotation you will work alongside the McLaren Flint Orthopedic surgery residency program and Orthopedic traumatologist, Dr James Ostrander and Dr Matthew Coon.
