CLINICAL EXPERIENCE BY YEAR

Clinical duties are based on 1-2 month blocks with faculty on a rotating basis.

Click below on individual years for further information and firsthand resident experiences.

Foundations

Your first year is designed to provide broad exposure to the practice of medicine. We train physicians, not technicians.

First year residents will rotate for one month in the follow specialties:

  • Emergency Medicine

  • Surgical Intensive Care

  • Vascular Surgery

  • Orthopedic Spine Surgery

  • Musculoskeletal Radiology

  • Anesthesiology (2 weeks)

  • Rheumatology (2 weeks)

  • Six 1-month blocks of General Orthopedics

Acute Orthopedic Care

Your second year is when you will experience the most growth as a physician. You will spend 9-months running your own service rotating with our Faculty while also taking on primary call responsibilities and managing ER and floor consults during 3 months of orthopedic night float. You will be the first point of contact for many patients on our service and engage in clinical decision making and carry out treatments - while always having a senior resident on backup as a safety net.

Services covered include:

  • General Orthopedics / Trauma

  • Adult Reconstruction

  • Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery

  • Hand Surgery

NOLA/Hurley

Your third year allows continued growth during five months running a service while rotating with faculty, one month of ortho night float, and two months of elective time for exploring subspecialty interests. This year is capped by a 4-month rotation at Children's Hospital in New Orleans, LA and 2 months working in a level 1 trauma center at Hurley Medical Center

Services covered include:

  • Pediatric Orthopedics (NOLA)

  • Level 1 trauma (Hurley)

  • Musculoskeletal Oncology (at Peds)

  • Adult Reconstruction

  • General Orthopedics / Trauma

  • Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery

  • Foot and Ankle

  • Joint Preservation

  • Hand Surgery

Advanced Principles

Fourth year comes with increased operative autonomy based on skill level and senior backup call responsibilities. You will serve as the primary supervisor of junior on call residents and be available as a resource to help them appropriately diagnose and treat orthopedic complaints. Should you wish to pursue subspecialty fellowship training, fellowship interviews take place during PGY4.

Services covered include:

  • Adult Reconstruction

  • General Orthopedics / Trauma

  • Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery

  • Foot and Ankle

  • Joint Preservation

  • Hand Surgery

  • Elective of your choice - 2 Months

Chief Year

As a chief resident you will continue to hone your surgical and diagnostic skills in preparation for practice or fellowship. You will continue to serve as back-up for junior residents on call, and do not have any primary call shifts in your final year. Chiefs create the daily education schedule and become increasingly exposed to the administrative aspects of medicine and medical education.

Services covered include:

  • Adult Reconstruction

  • General Orthopedics / Trauma

  • Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery

  • Foot and Ankle

  • Joint Preservation

  • Hand Surgery

  • Spine Surgery

  • Ortho Chief Float
